Al Olme got his first bike, a present from his wife, Maryann, for his 50th birthday. Since Al and Maryann are life members of the BMW CCA and have a long-established fondness for BMWs, a R69S conversion was a natural choice. But Maryann, at five foot nothing tall, couldn’t see anything when sitting on the bike behind Al. A sidecar was the perfect solution and suited Al’s contrarian nature. The only problem is continually explaining that he doesn’t “have to” drive a sidecar, he does it because he wants to. As a confirmed sidecar guy, Al became involved with the United Sidecar Association and served in several positions on their board. Together they have organized several rallies and Al has served as the BMWRA vendor chair for three years. Al strongly believes in volunteerism and believes that when a club becomes so large that it requires a staff to run it, it’s no longer a club but just another small business.
