The mountains are calling us… back to a place where roads draw us around twists, hairpins and sweeping curves through dense forest, meandering rivers, deep valleys and abundant wildlife. On behalf of the RA, we invite you to Canaan Valley, WV for the 2009 rally. The RA held its 2005 rally at this same site only to be chased by Hurricane Ivan
Canaan Valley was chosen in true RA fashion as an excellent riding venue. This area of West Virginia has some of the most scenic and challenging roads, both pavement and dirt. Getting there is part of the fun, because no matter which direction you come from the roads are great.
Canaan Valley Resort sits in the middle of the state park of the same name. The resort offers outdoor swimming pool, and ski slopes (the ski lift will be operating during our rally), hiking on nature trails, an 18 Hole golf course. In addition there is an indoor pool, a rock-climbing wall, a full service restaurant, a snack bar, and a lounge, all available to rally goers.
Camping will be included as part of the rally fee, and if you like camping, but don't want to lug all the gear, Ted Mayberry is renting campsites, no fuss, no muss. If you’re not up to roughing it, there are multiple lodging options, stay at the resort or at one of the nearby places, rent a cabin or reserve an RV spot in the state park’s regular campground with full hookups.
This venue is spread out through the park and resort so shuttle service will be provided during the rally. The main resort is designated as Rally Central with indoor and outdoor vending, Bier Garden, and food service, with daily special dinner buffets. There will be nightly entertainment. We believe we have the best schedule of speakers and seminars at any rally ever. Similarly we think the motorcycle courses, for road, street or dirt riding, are the best ever available at a rally. Of course we will have all the standard rally fare: awards, door prizes, closing ceremonies, etc. As a bonus the local Rotary Club has arranged for a chicken BBQ ride. And of course we always love volunteers at our rally.
Then there’s the riding. We'll have both organized events, and self-guided tours, for both on-road and dual-sport riders. Within a short distance from the state park entrance, there are paved roads rivaling the most technical any where. In every direction there are dirt and gravel roads which just beckon GSers.
There are many local atractions. Possible destinations include, Dolly Sods, Seneca Rocks, Blackwater Falls, Cass Scenic Railroad, Spruce Knob: the options are endless. Browse through "7 Days in Tucker County" to get some ideas, or we can recommend any number of short trips outside the county. There is so much to do, we urge you to come early and stay after the rally to enjoy the best of West Virginia.
