    The NYPD Motorcycle Squad:
A Century of Service to New York City
    May 16, 2011 through January 9, 2012

The NYPD Motorcycle Squad: A Century of Service to New YorkCity explores the fascinating history of one of the most storied units in the New York City Police Department. The motorcycle squad was introduced under commissioner Rhinelander Waldo in 1911 and has led the way ever since in highway patrols, street-bound crime fighting, maintaining the peace in public places, and carrying out high profile escorts. This exhibition will explore that past through a selection of vintage department-used motorcycles, including a late 1940s-model classic red Indian Motorcycle to a late 1960s model silver Harley. The exhibit includes photographs of the motorcycle squad in action, assisting motorcades of presidents and dignitaries from every decade, and memorabilia that includes the squad’s leather jackets and 1950s-era early speed detection devices, and many other artifacts. Visitors will also enjoy original film footage of the motorcycle squad in action in the 1960s and 70s, paired with oral history interviews.

The NYPD Motorcycle Squad: A Century of Service to New York City is sure to please visitors of every age.
