I'm visiting N.C.

I'm riding down to the Dragon/national park/Cherohala area. I'm considering staying here: http://www.fontanavillage.com/

Anyone been there?

Fontana Village

It's a beautiful place to visit. Just be careful of the police presence on the Dragon and in the area. They are coming down on speeders and careless riders/drivers. If you are going to do the Dragon do it during the week and first thing in the morning. Otherwise.. enjoy your trip! Be safe!

Any other information?

OK, So, I'm riding down and will be pulling in on Friday, August 22 - leaving Sunday morning, August, 24. I'm staying at Fontana Lake. Anyone have any other interesting info - construction? Fires? A good BMW dealer nearby? Any interesting or unusual events on Saturday? Nearby towns/attractions to visit?

I don't think I've ever stayed there. I've stayed at Tapoco Lodge (years ago for some IBMWR event) and Nantahala Village (several times, that's a nice setup). Fontana Village should be a pretty good location. Right on 28, easy access to the Gap and the Skyway, etc. Not much in the way of stores out in that direction, so you might want to stock up on beer as you pass Bryson City. Graham County is dry.

The ride down and back was a little tougher than I expected. However, the Great Smokey Mountain National Park, the mountain roads, and the area towns were totally awesome! Particular points of fun were Hwy 441, Hwy 129, and the Foothills Parkway between 129 and 321. I went over The Dragon early on Saturday morning so there was light traffic and only two LEOs. The views at the lookouts, especially Calderwood Dam, were magnificent. I'm excited that the MOA rally is nearby next year. I'll definitely make a run down to Gatlinburg and Hwy 441 again.

Love the area. Don't forget the Foothills Parkway. Not as long or famous or challenging as the others but I guarantee it will be empty. Will they ever finish that beautiful road?
