RA membership numbers

I know the motorcycle industry in general is having a hard time attracting new riders, but the shinking membership number for the RA is sobering. I just completed the survey sent to me and I now understand why it was sent and just how important it is to figure out how to get members back into the club. If the trend of membership lapses continues, I fear there will no longer be an RA organization. Are the membership stats published on this site correct?

Re: RA membership numbers

Having good rally experiences are what drive numbers.  The RA was in CA two years ago...membership went down.because it did not draw many folks.  Last year's rally did well and the numbers went back up.  This year's rally should bring in even more.

But the bottom line is that many folks are "aging out" or dying.  The RA and other organizations like it must reach out to younger people to build the membership base.

We  could use your help.  Send me an email; OldBMWMaaster@yahoo.com and I will fill you in on what you can do to assist BMWRA.

Thanks

Re: RA membership numbers

Motorcycles are going down in numbers becasue you can not text and ride a motorcycle.  I think all groups are losing numbers involving 2 wheel in the 'developed' world. You might only need one car, but in most cases you need a car and motorcycle.

Re: RA membership numbers

I think there are several reasons for this most likely, and I think we don't understand them.  I've started my own informal poll at my work (we have a motorcycle community actually complete with an internal web page) to see what my co-workers who ride think along with some other non-riders.  It's the non-riders perspective that I tihnk will be theo most interesting.  One point that has come out already is that for many youngter people, younger being defined as younger than me, there is not as much interest in cars as my generation had.  Older people (again defined as older than me, very scientific) had a much greater interest in cars.  This seems to initially translate to motorcycles as well.  We''ll see what comes from the conversations...

Re: RA membership numbers

I let my membership lapse a couple of years ago, but would like to renew it if the price were not so high.  The current rate of $35 for a U.S. member sounds pretty attractive compared to the cost for a Canadian.  It looks like BMWRA is close to having an option that would be less expensive and not include a paper magazine, but I do not see it yet.  Is there a timeline for that?

$50 USD (International rate) = $65.47 CAD.   An online version of OTL would be fine.  I consume almost all of my media electronically now, anyway.

Re: RA membership numbers

So I went and asked a bunch of my younger non-riding friends why they don't ride and what might interest them.  The top reasons they don't ride now were:

  1. Too dangerous
  2. No interest
  3. Too expensive
  4. Most friends don't ride
  5. Season is too short

Then I asked them what it might take to get them interested.  Almost everyone said someplace where somebody could teach them to ride on a bike they didn't have to buy and give them the protective equipment they might need to do so.  They might want to try it to see if they like it, but don't want to spend any money to find out as there are other things they do like and spend money on.  So that passion is not there and was not developed as a kid.  An intesting note, most have no interest in cars wrenching, two didn't even own cars.  They all thought distracted driving was a problem, but most admitted to doing other things while driving even though they knew it was a bad idea.  The cost of new quality bikes was suprising and pretty much a turn off for many.  The motorcycle culture, which around here is predominantly "Harley-esk", was also a turn off for the majority and nuetral for most of the rest.  Only one person I talked to thought it was "awesome", but not enough to ride.  A few people brought up road conditions, which this spring around here are horrendous.  Didn't seem to be much difference between guys and girls.  So recruiting new riders may require a different strategy than may have worked in the past since the interests seem to be a bit different.  Anyway, there ya go.

Re: RA membership numbers

You are correct Fred.  Canada does not have a media rate on postage, so everything has to go first class.   We are working on the digital option.  It will likely launch with the new website/software.

Re: RA membership numbers

That is great news, Jerry!  Do you have any idea what the timeline for that might be?

Thanks,

Fred
